We recently published an article by one of our media partners, on how social media has changed the face of political elections in Nigeria. However, it seems that the new media revolution is about to change the face of justice in rape cases in Nigeria.

Earlier this week, a video of the apparent gang rape of a girl was posted on the internet, by the rapists themselves.

The group of five rapists believed to be students of the Abia State University, either through arrogance or ignorance posted the sexual assault, which they recorded on their mobile phone, for the world to see online.

The citizen journalism website, Sahara Reporters, was the first to call for an appeal to catch the perpetrators, igniting a web-wide uproar and witch hunt for the rapists, dubbed the Abia 5.

Call for Justice

Bloggers like Linda Ikeji picked up the story too. In her blog, Ikeji said she had contacted an aide of the Governor of Abia State, asking for an investigation into the case. The response from the Governor’s office was less than satisfactory:

“…we contacted one of the aides of the Governor of Abia State and they told us that they would do an investigation and get back to us,” blogged Ikeji.

“They called me the following day (yesterday) to say they have concluded their investigations. Result - The boys in the video are not students of Abia State University. They called the VC [Vice-Chancellor] of the school, the VC told them it didn't happen in the school, end of story.”

Kelvin Igbodo, a blogger with the Nigerian Daily Times, appealed to Nigerian leaders in an open-letter, writing:

“It is clear that we have to fight our battles ourselves since you, whom we entrusted with the responsibility, are only interested in how your bank accounts can swell. This case has been taken up by the youth and we will monitor it to its completion, till those hard hearted rapists are brought to book and punished.”

“We started a movement on Twitter; we have harassed government officials and lawmakers. We will not rest until justice is done.”

Help Find Them

Those who have watched the video, describe it as a horrific ordeal that went on for over one hour. During the assault, the names believed to be those of the rapists were mentioned: CHENNA, WISDOM, ZAKI, CHISOM, and IFEANYI / UGBAANYI !

The victim was also heard begging her attackers to take her life, saying “Kill me, Kill me, you people should just kill me”.

#3 @goat: I am glad you already

@goat: I am glad you already called yourself a 'Goat' because that is clearly what you are. You are obviously a motherless child (with all due respect to all motherless children out there) and possibly a previous rapist, otherwise you would not be so heartless as to suggest that this girl could have possibly enjoyed being violated. If you had a mother you would consider how she would feel if she had been raped, or perhaps if her daughter, sister, mother, aunty had been raped. You're a heartless goat and I hope God punishes you for what you have said.

Submitted by Agu Chinweze.O (not verified) on Thu, 29/09/2011 - 5:21pm.

For what so ever ,nobody deserve this kind of threatment even a prostitute.

I pour my heartfelt sympathy to the poor girl. It is heartbreaking.I pray she recover from the truama.May God help her to forgive herself.I pray for an understanding among the people around her.She need to be encouraged to move on with her life. The harm is already done but she must live her life positively.Despite what happened, i believe she still have something better to offer this generation.

Guilt is devil strategies. Never offend God by condeming yourself..Focus on God for a change b/cos you can do it alone.God of all grace will complete you and make you what you ought to be.

Remain blessed baby.

#7 TRACK THESE PIGS DOWN

Submitted by Michael (not verified) on Mon, 26/09/2011 - 6:48am.

I have seen the video. It is so sad that this ever happened. The victim knows some of the rapist. it is 50% chance that she is still alive because she knows some of them or she might be blackmail-threatened not to tell any one, else the tape will leak. However, the tape is out in the public. Nigeria needs people like ME to investigate this issue. the police are handicapped for some reasons which we all know. "Nigeria factor". I assure you that with the few evidence in the video, if i have all necessary resources needed to carry out my investigation, i will track these guys down. ITS A PROMISEE!!!

#9 Abia State Univertiy Gang Rape

Submitted by Austin Okolo (not verified) on Fri, 23/09/2011 - 11:46am.

Sinners shall not go unpunished as Oluwatoyin said above, but the reverse is the case in Nigeria.we celebrate them even with NATIONAL AWARD. Without any apology to Abia state governmet, I must  say it  is a shame for the govternment to conclud that nathing happened. when did the Nigeria government at any level become so fast at investigating matters?

As for the animals, the couse they placed on their lives will continue to the end of their generations. They will never know peaece.Their  children and their children's children will suffer the spell. It not over yet, JUSTICE must be done.

#10 Abia State university Rape

Submitted by Oluwatoyin (not verified) on Wed, 21/09/2011 - 12:02pm.

Definitely sinners shall not go unpunished. I believe those animals have no sisters. I wonder how someone can be so depraved to visit such evil on fellow human beings. May they never know peace all the days of their lives. May that young ladys cry hunt them to their graves. I'm not surprised at the attitudes of the authority because their children might be involved. Since its not any of their daughters that was raped they are less concerned
