Earlier unofficial results however show that, after more than half of votes have been counted, incumbent President, Abdoulaye Wade is ahead with 32%, while his closest rival, Macky Sall, is on 25%.
A second round of elections will be held on 18 March.
President Wade’s third term bid sparked violence in the country’s capital, Dakar in the days leading to the elections.
Wade was booed as he cast his vote on Sunday. Official results are due out on Friday.
