KONY 2012: Unfettered Aid and Post-Crisis Recovery
In March, a US-based charity, Invisible Children, launched a campaign to catch the notorious LRA leader Joseph Kony. However, in their efforts to make Josephy Kony "famous" for his crimes so that he can be captured, the Kony 2012 campaign was hit with criticism about its portrayal of Uganda.
On this IQ4News Special page, we want to investigate and give in-depth analysis of the political environment that result in the production of warlords and rebels like Joseph Kony, and provide factual analysis on the origin of the Ituri conflict in Uganda, and the role played by neighbouring countries. It will showcase present day Uganda and investigate what the main concerns of the average Ugandans are, and what local initiatives are put in place to prevent people like Joseph Kony sprouting up again. Finally, using the Kony 2012 campaign by Invisible Children as an example, we will explore the strategies employed by these foreign NGOs and where they go wrong.
