Matthew signed a short term contract with Trönö IK with effect from August 1st and will be at the Division 3 Södra Norrland for 2 months until the end of the season.
Matthew went to Trönö after having a one-year stint at Chinese based club Anhui Jiufang in the China League One. He later moved to another Chinese League One side this year, Shenyang Shenbei F.C but was unsuccessful at the club prompting the Swedish club to come calling for him.
Matthew started his professional career in USA for George Mason University in 2003 and had a four-year spell with them. He later moved to Germany to have spells with KFC Uerdingen 05and 1. FC Kleve.
Spending only a month with Kleve, he later signed for Austrian outfit FC Vöcklabruck.
Matthew started his international career with The Gambia since 2006 where he was one time, vice-captain and is reportedly to have capped for The Gambia nine times.
The club also acquired the services of former Degerfors IF, Romanian side Petrosani and first Gambian player to play in South America Yankuba “Mal” Ceesay and youngster Abdoulie “Cho” Sanneh. The northern club drafted in the Gambian trio in an effort to save their season and club from relegation whilst Abdoulie “Cho” Manneh played club football for Real de Banjul before leaving for the US, where he played college football.
Matthew Mendy did play his first game with the duo last Saturday for the club, and was the man of the match when Trönö thrashed Sjötulls IK with a 6-1 away. Mendy scored the first goal. Midfielder Yankuba “Mal” Ceesay scored twice from his central midfield position, and 22-year-old young Gambia striker Abdoulie “Cho” scored twice as well. The 6th goal was scored by Magnus Wallgren, one of the best Swedish players in Trönö.
Their next game will be on Saturday against IK Huge at home.
Confirming the story to Gambia Sports Online, the trio’s agent Michael Kallback said “I took them to Trönö to play there for the rest of the season, and then they will go on to an Allsvenskan or Superettan side next season”. “They play here just to show themselves to bigger and better clubs, and hopefully they will sign with any of the pro-clubs in Sweden for the next 2012/2013 season” he added.
