Gillingham FC will have a look at Njogu Demba-Nyrén in a friendly game today as they weigh up whether the much-travelled striker is worth adding to the squad.
The 32-year-old Gambia international has trained with Gillingham and will get a run-out as the squad’s fringe players travel to take on Ipswich Town in a behind-closed-doors game.
Njogu Demba-Nyrén has played all over Europe, including spells in Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Norway and Bulgaria, during a varied career and finished last season in League One at Notts County, where he scored once in 12 appearances although he has been told his contract will not be renewed beyond the summer of 2011.
Njogu Demba was on trial at Birmingham City but the deal wasn’t materialized and the player immediately showed interest in playing for Norwich but they didn’t show interest and since then he has been looking for a club until recently when he started to train with Gillingham.
The Gills are in the market for a striker, but manager Andy Hessenthaler will reserve his judgment until after the game.
He said: “He [Njogu Demba] has been training with us and we’ll have a look at him [at Ipswich].”
“It came from an agent who asked us to have a look at him, he played for West Ham and it didn’t work out there for him, the level was too much. In training he’s looked okay but you never really know until you see them in a real match,” Hessenthaler concluded.
