Senegal has for years been regarded as the beacon of democracy in West Africa. However, incumbent President, Abdoulaye Wade's ambition to run for a third-term is putting that position in jeopardy.
Opponents of President Wade, 85, are united in what they hace called the June 23 movement, in order to fight the president's ambition for re-election. Protesters were met by police in the country's capital, Dakar, with tear-gas and gun fire.
Presidential candidadte Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, in an interview with Al-Jazeera has vowed that protests will go on until the elections are held.
"The issue for us is this, we know that Abdoulaye Wade is a specialist in fraudualent elections and we don't trust him at all. If we let him run, by Sunday night, he will proclaim himself winner," said Gadio.
Protesters have seized control of three blocks in Dakar, and at least one man is reported to have died.
