An official at the SA Football Association (SAFA) has revealed that South Africa will be replacing Libya to host the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, despite the fact that Nigeria was the reserve country for the 2013 games.
"I can confirm that South Africa has been given the rights after a meeting was held a few hours ago," said the official.
“Yes, there were initial fears and talks that we had jumped the gun about talking about SA hosting in place of Libya, but it has now been officially agreed by all parties."
The replacement of Libya by South Africa is due to “current political situation prevailing in Libya”.
Both Algeria and Nigeria said they should have been awarded the event having been chosen as stand-by hosts five years ago in case Libya withdrew.
South Africa will also be taking over the 2014 African Nations Championship.
