Former Google employee developed voters registration software

As Nigerians register to vote in the upcoming elections in April, a former Google employee is being praised for single-handedly creating the software that was used to gather the biometric data of voters.

Nyimbi Odero, along with his small team of volunteers has saved the country over $100M.

“For the first time, we are not importing, buying or using skills from outside of our borders,” Odero told Al-Jazeera, “Africans are finding African problems, building solutions, deploying and supporting them”.

The hardware was also locally produced by a Lagos based company, Zinox.

“If an American can do it, I can do it better”, boasted Zinox CEO, Leo-Stan Ekeh, “Africans are taking control”.

Over 64 million people have been registered so far.
