Several activities have taken place throughout the week to celebrate the singer’s life. The activities, sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, included a football tournament between popular entertainers, as well as a public lecture at the National Theatre where she was also laid-in- state.
The funeral service in Lagos was presided over by Archbishop Vinning of the Anglican Cathedral at Archbishop Vinning Anglican Cathedral. Following the rites in Lagos, her body was flown to Awka, Anambra State where she will be buried.
Christy Essien-Igbokwe was an accomplished musician and actress, starting her career in Aba in the mid 1970s with the Masquerade crew. She released her first album “Freedom” aged 16.
Mrs Essien-Igbokwe, who was fondly known as “Lady of Songs”, died on Thursday morning in Lagos after a brief illness.
