Africa’s first democratically elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has become one of the two African women awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, 72, and Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee were awarded the prestigious prize for their work on women's rights.
Leymah Gbowee, who also won the Profile in Courage Award in 2009, has worked to mobilize women across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring end to the long war in Liberia.
Speaking about the awards, the prize committee said: “We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society.”
