The Orange Democratic leaders have condemned an incident in which goons attacked the home and set ablaze the car of Lari MP David Njuguna on Saturday after he called upon President Kibaki to declare his support for Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidature. The MPs who accompanied Party leader and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in a meeting with ODM delegates from Trans-Nzoia and West Pokot Counties on Thursday said that intolerance almost brought the countries to its knees during the 2008 Post-election violence.
Castigating the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, a body charged with fighting ethnic animosity in the country, for keeping mum over the incident, Sigor Member of Parliament Wilson Litole said that every Kenya has a right for opinion.
“Hon. David Njuguna talked about free democracy and as a result his car was burnt. Last year, Raphael Tuju’s motorcade was attacked in Kisumu and the commission launched investigations into the attack. What has Mzalendo Kibunja done on what happened to Hon. Njuguna?” Litole asked
Rarieda Member of parliament Nicholas Gumbo said that incidence is a manifestation that there are certain people who are still bent on taking Kenya backward.
“The culture of political intolerance should come to an end. We in ODM condemn in the strongest terms possible what befell Hon. Njuguna”.
They said that the Orange Democratic Movement would not relent in its quest to promote democracy in the country. Party leader Raila Odinga said that the party distinguishes itself from other parties as a beacon for social democracy and social market economy.
“We don’t want others to infiltrate our party. Let them organize their parties. They are uniting against ODM because they know very well that we are a party with a national outlook,” Odinga told ODM delegates in Trans-Nzoia.
He dismissed rumours that the party is divided over the mode of nominating its presidential candidate a head of the 2012 presidential elections.
“ODM is united. We are united. We were 5 candidates in 2007 and the winner in our party was supported. We are showing other parties what democracy is. So, there is no bad blood between me and Hon. Musalia Mudavadi,” He added.
Mr. Odinga had earlier met local leaders from Tranzoia at Kitale club and opened ODM offices in Kitale town. He was accompanied with the party’s Executive Director Janet Ongera and National Elections Board Secretary Dr. Gideon Misoi.
