South Africa have emerged the overall winner of this year's All Africa Games, which rounded off in Maputo, Mozambique, yesterday.

South Africa took home an impressive 61 gold medals, 55 silver and 40 bronze making a total of 156 medals.

Egypt, who emerged the overall winner in the last games held in Algiers, came second with 32 gold, 14 silver and 20 bronze, totalling 66 medals.

Nigeria followed in third place with 31 gold, 28 silver and 39 bronze, totalling 98 medals.

Nigeria did however emerge the winner in the athletics category, taking home a total of 21 medals.

Ethiopia and Kenya came second and third in athletics, respectively, with 20 medals for Ethiopia and 17 for Kenya.

The Black Meteors of Ghana beat South Africa 4-2, to take home gold in the football category.

The next All Africa Games will be held in Brazzaville, Congo, in 2015, marking the 50th anniversary of the Games.
