A somber mood engulfed the nation on Monday morning following the passing on of Nobel Laureate and Environmentalist Professor Wangari Maathai. Reports indicate that she died of cancer at the Nairobi Hospital at around 10.00pm on Sunday.
She was one of the Key figures in Kenya’s struggle against authoritarian leaders, and her death is viewed as a blow to the war against tribalism and corruption in the country.
She will also be remembered for her environmental conservation efforts that won her the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. Professor Maathai is credited for being the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a Doctorate degree, where she specialized in Veterinary Anatomy.
In 2002, she was elected the Member of Parliament for Tetu constituency in Central Province and appointed an assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources by President Mwai Kibaki in the same year.
Wangari Maathai was the founder of the Green-Belt Movement, an environmental conservation outfit.
She died aged 71.
