The Rivers State University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt has now been officially renamed Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Rosemund Green-Osahogulu, has said.
Prof. Green-Osahogulu announced this while declaring open a 5-Day Workshop on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for Senior Staff of tertiary institutions in Rivers State being hosted by the university and organized by Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), a subsidiary of the National Communications Commission (NCC).
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the approval for the new name was communicated to the institution via a letter with reference number, NUC/ES/125/Vol. 1/30, dated 15th August, 2011.
According to her, the change which was announced by the Visitor of the school and Governor of the State, Rt. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, to immortalize its immediate past Pro-Chancellor, Ambassador Ignatius Ajuru, who was brutally murdered in 2009 by yet-to-be identified gunmen is very much welcomed, noting that it is a fitting way to immortalize individuals who have contributed to the development of the State.
Represented by the Director of the university’s ICT Centre, Professor Dele Joshua Osahogulu, the VC thanked the NCC for the opportunity to host the workshop, saying it is indicative of how much progress the institution has made in the area of upscaling of its ICT infrastructure, urging participants to take advantage of the workshop to gain hands-on skills and deploy same to achieve efficiency in their work.
President of Digital Bridge Institute, Professor Raymond Akwule, represented by Mr. Onuoha Amaechi, said the workshop is part of DBI’s focus on bridging the gaps in manpower development, noting that the institute seeks to enhance the capacity of senior staffers of participating tertiary education institutions through the workshop, adding that the programme will extend to other universities across the country.
Some of the participants commended the managements of the host university, DBI and NCC for the workshop, saying it has opened new vistas of knowledge for them, pointing out that certain tasks can now be executed effortlessly through the use of ICT, expressing the hope that the training programme would be sustained.
Participants were drawn from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu Oroworukwo, University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology, Rumueme, and the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, Rumuola.

#1 Pls help the future of Tasued

PLS COME TO OUR RESCUE
Being the Resolution of
the TASUED SUG
(WELFARISM 2011/2012)
and other well meaning
stakeholders of the University on the recent
obnoxious policy of Gov.
Ibikunle Amosun over
the conversion of Tai
Solarin University of
Education into an Institute of Education
affiliated to Faculty of
Education, OOU, Ago
Iwoye; we felt that its
imperative to educate,
orientate and of course enlighten the entire
populace.
OUR CASE
(1) TASUED is the first
University of Education
in the whole of Federal Republic of Nigeria, the
second in Africa and
Eight in the global World.
These facts are not
rhetorical expression of
figure but a record that has stand the test of
time in physical
structure, academic
development and
positively oriented to
the professionalization of teaching in Ogun
State and Nigeria at
large.
(2) The University was
largely established by
the Ogun State government via the Tai
Solarin University of
Education law 2005 of
enrolled house bill, NO
24/09/2005 of the Ogun
State house of assembly which was
assented to by the
state government on
31st August 2005.
(3) TASUED has
overtime produced three set of graduands
and already on the
verge of convocating
the fourth set. In
addition, the school
currently operates a formidable
postgraduate school.
(4) More so, merging
TASUED with OOU
would be a deliberate
attempt to evaporate the long protected pride
and the glory it has
given to the state and
Nigeria at large over the
years. We cannot
imagine our own Ogun State which has the
singular honor of having
the first specialized
university of education
in Nigeria willingly
trowed away even when the world is
already paying homage
to our feats.
(5) Preserving the
status of TASUED is a
giant stride decision to effect your plans of
refining and rebuilding
the educational sector
especially in the primary
and secondary school,
these is because we are professionals in
teaching.
OUR RECOMMENDATION
1. We appeal to the
state government to
reverse and of course revert the merging of
TASUED with OOU. The
state government
should not politicize the
location of our
university to appeal the emotional sentiment of
either of the tribe in
Ogun state.
2. Lastly, we implore the
state government to
allow the Federal government to take
over TASUED if the
financial burden is too
weighty for the state
to bear. These will
preserve the heritage of the premier University
of education.
CONCLUSION
It would be recalled that
thousands of Youth in
Ogun state studying in TASUED stood firmly in
the torrent of rain and
scorching sun during the
campaign of Gov.
Ibikunle Amosun which
hitherto resulted into his victory at the polls.
We hereby implore all
the good people of Ogun
State, Parent and Well-
wishers of sustainable
development in the educational sector to
come to our aid by
making the government
of Ogun state sees
reason at which the
fastest growing, conflict free, reformed,
re-branded institution
should not be merge
with OOU which is lower
in standard and in need
of timely resuscitation. In submission,
subsuming the voices
and demand of
thousands of
progressive minded and
law abiding student in Ogun state is an open
invitation to the anarchy
and chaos as we will
not appreciate our
government
ungovernable (Ogun State). Thanks in
anticipation for your
cooperation and mutual
understanding as regard
this sensitive issue.
