Umar Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian Terrorist

Author:

If someone ever told me that a Nigerian will one day engage in an activity that will make every Nigerian sober, I will never have taken such a person serious. Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened in the aftermath of the first and only attempted terrorist attack by a Nigerian.

Already Tarnished Image

This act which can only be described as cowardly and selfish, has ignited fresh concerns about the already tarnished image of Nigeria.

The news, which came just as Nigerians home and abroad were enjoying christmas, brought celebrations to an abrupt end as Nigerians were very much aware of the consequences that would come with it.

The only comforting revelation out of this story was that Umar Abdulmutallab's father, a prominent personality in the banking industry, had tried to warn the American authorities after growing concerns about his son's radical Islamic views. Unfortunately, his warnings fell on deaf ears.

Rebranding!

Just at the time we Nigerians are beginning to recognize a need to change how the world see us for better, alas! One of us decides to ruin things, by joining forces with a sinister group that do not even have any bearing with our motherland.

Alhaji Umaru Mutallab: Suspects fatherAlhaji Umaru Mutallab: Suspects father

If I, a Nigerian on Nigerian soil feel bad about this, I wonder how Nigerians in the Diaspora feel. My only question now is how many good things will Nigerians have to do before the negative impressions turn positive?

Wishing you all a happy and bomb-free new year!

What else can one say about Farouk

Many people have passed so much comment on Farouk's action that repeating them may be boring. Well, a good observer would have expected a thing like this; considering the near total destruction of our family values in Nigeria. What can the parents that believed all they owe their children is money tell the world about a child they know close to nothing about? Also, ours is increasingly becoming a country of anything goes; where people can not say some simple truth without asking which part of the country you are from or which religion you practise. The elites are the worst offenders. They believe so much in the acquisition of wealth (mostly ill-gotten) to the extent of forsaking the home front. However, as an adage in my place says, "a child you refuse to build will be the one to sell off the houses you built." Let them continue to cheat the common people and all they will get from their children is disgrace and public opprobrium. Those who employed all sought of religious teachers to indoctrinate their children should know that they are contributing to religious fanaticism and hatred, they should not turn around to shed crocodile tears when the seed of hatred they are planting start germinating because that is the bounty harvest they are going to get. If you do not believe this, then the souls of all the innocent people killed in Nigeria over the years over some minor religious problems and the hard stance of many so-called educated people on justifying this would not forgive you. The radicalization of the young ones did not just start today; go to the Nigerian universities, particularly those in the North and South West and you will understand how many of the Farouks are being recruited on daily basis.Until some people wake up from their illusion of thinking that Nigeria will one day be made an Islamic state, you will not stop having the Farouk Muttalabs of this world. For God to bless Nigeria, we must work for it. Truth exhalts a nation. As, Sir Ahmadu Bello once said, "conscience is an open wound, only truth can heal it." Religious tolerance should be where our re-branding efforts will start from if we are to expect any progress in our national lives.

Its a slap on the integrity

Its a slap on the integrity of this country;i must say. Though the did is done, nevertheless all hope is not loss as to resucitating the tarnished image of this country. All we need do is to take it upon on individuals cos we are the country ourselves. The guestion should be 'ask not what your country can do for you;ask what you can do for your country' according to john F. Kennedy.
We should on the other hand; try to let people know that because one head is bad does not implies that all heads are bad.
Nigeria should in turn promugate law(s) that will guide against future occurence of such act.
Government should also ensured that proper action is taken as to purnishing all those that are involved in this inhuman act so as to prove to the world that this promising act is not support of this barberic act.
Thank you

For some one that feel lonely

For some one that feel lonely and dejected, this might be the best days for Umar Abdulmuttalab. I think the inadequacy of the intelligency community in the United State rather than the anything Nigerian is responsible for this near catastrope. It will be wrong for anybody to stereotype Nigeria and Nigerians after this incident. Based on attempted and successful terrorist attacks, United States and United Kingdom still have more per capita terrorist than Nigeria. So if those countries are not stereotyped I don't know why Nigeria should be. Secondly I am of the opinion that Alhaji Abdulmuttalab should be hailed as an hero, not only for reporting his son (he did that several times), but also helping the international community revealed the inadequacy of the multibillion dollar counterterrorism infrastructured built since 9/11. I am one of the people that strongly support the investigation called by Senator Libberman et al in the US to unravel why the complaints filed by "A father" is treated as "not serious". If you checked the list of the 500,000 people the young Abdulmuttalab is lumped into, the odds are not more than 20 individuals would had been reported by their fathers. Finally Nigeria future is great and bright, this is an unnecessary distraction. Our attention should be focused on issues like freedom of information in Nigeria. I cannot help but be livid when I as a Nigerian do not know the state of health of my president and some democratic ignoramus are saying it is personal to his family. This is why we called the position of the president a public office; the president lives and dies in the eye of the public.

I'll say this one thing for

I'll say this one thing for sure... He's totally, and for good, rebranded Nigeria. Dora'd better start sending out her CV. Think of the implications... heightened more tedious time wasting security protocols before Nigerians are allowed a visa... Raised eyebrows if said Nigerian is from the North... More raised eyebrows if he/she's also a Muslim... Oh boy...

This wont only tarnish our

This attempted terrorist attack just increased Nigeria's bad reputation. This will affect Nigeria in a negative way especially in the area of travelling outside the country.

It will just strengthen the

It will just strengthen the already tarnished image of Nigeria.

To me this unfortunate

To me this unfortunate incident can't do any harm to our image. Our image has long been tarnished by our depleted economy. The developed economies see an average Nigerian as either a born fraudster, drug pusher/peddler,thief, prostitute or any other bad tag. This is a function of a bad economy. The visa or entry to USA is not hard unless you're not qualified. In the 70s and 80s people sent money from Nigeria to over sea. Traveling to there was not hard. That was when we needed no visa to travel to many European and American countries but how many was traveling then?. Only a few cos our economy was good. As economy started deteriorating, traveling out became harder as more people wanted to travel out. I've seen a lot of people that have multiple visas despite our already tarnished image. Those ones are qualified. This Umar Abdulmutallab has a two year American visa remember and he was traveling around the world. What of other countries that have terrorists. Have their image been tarnished?. All I can say is it might make America be more vigilant on Nigerian muslims but not everybody. Thanks

I don't blame d young lad.For

I don't blame d young lad.For me,am tired of d so called usa.If u see wat they are doing,they ar d real terrorist.

The consequences may not be pleasant but God will see us through.

Surely it wud tarnish d image of nigeria

Surely it wud tarnish d image of nigeria but i don't think d effect wud b too much cos d government as well as nigerians in general is doing everything possible 2 show dat we as Nigerians do not support such an act.

highly disgusting?

well an adage says thus....a fellow who is disgraced, transcend on the others.... but the issue is this;there is a lot to do on the side of muslim community as a whole. do you know how many lives were claimed during boko haran tenure, and the recent bauchi religious crisis.. all were from the muslim corridor.when have we heard of christian judiciously or unjudiciously killing people around the nation?, really nigerians, have a lot to do and however, we should solve the problems of innocent xtians dying than avoiding an international disgrace caused by that stupid b*****, muttallab'
and more so, the stupid b***** needs to learn his lesson and he should never be kept alive because he is dangerous! else, we would be nursing several traits of boko haran and bin ladin, and before we know it; terrorist here and there, which might lead to whole national and collateral damages.
please authorities incharge should hang that b***** muttallab publicly to teach some other infant terrorist from the muslim corridors some lessons to value life of other citizens around the globe!
thanks!
