Yemisi Ogunleye

When I was a young girl, I wanted to be an actress; my father wanted me to be a doctor so I set out to be a lawyer. Today, I have a degree in Creative Arts, a Masters in Media Production, and I am now in the final year of PhD in Media & Communications.

Going back to my ‘acting’ years, I remember an autumn day at college when I was approached by a member of a film crew looking for extras. Not only did I jump at the chance, but during the shoot, I managed to talk my way into getting a (silent) scene with the leading actor.

As my love for the scene evolved, I took modules in theatre arts at university, only for me to do a 360 not only finding a new love in graphic design, but also joining with the internet world. From then on, it was all about HTML and flash.

What is fascinating is that I can never really pinpoint when my love for television, and news emerged. As a child growing up in a family that was business and politics orientated, CNN always replaced soaps and dramas. It was not however until I started my masters in media production that it truly manifested itself. From then on it was all about pitching this, filming that, and as I have always fancied myself as a bit of a writer amongst other things, it all finally came together: Television, multimedia and writing.

An internship with CNN International finally got me hooked. I started a blog, then my website and shooting and writing stories.

My journey in the past twenty something years has been anything but dull; from aspiring to be the next Whoopi Goldberg, to being Nigeria ’s first female president, I am now looking forward to a future in Journalism, because knowledge as they say is power.
